Warriors split doubleheader

The first game of a doubleheader was one the Del Norte High baseball team would rather forget about against Hidden Valley, Ore., Tuesday at home. The second contest was much more to the Warriors’ liking.

In game one the Warriors had only two hits in the 11-0 loss.

“It was ugly,” head coach Pablo Lorenzi said, adding the team made way too many errors in the field and were not disciplined in the batters box. “We did not come out in the right frame of mind.”

DN softball, baseball teams play in Yreka

All weather in Yreka is not created equal.

While Del Norte High’s baseball team played just one rain-shortened game Saturday, the softball team played four — that’s right, four — games, and the first three were played in dry conditions.

Warriors softball Coach Jackie Heuberger had never before experienced a quadruple-header.

But that’s what her team played Saturday, winning the first three before falling to Ashland in the final game to finish second in the eight-team tournament.

The JV softball team also took second place at the tournament.

DN SB, BB teams both go 1-1 at tournament

YREKA —  The Del Norte High baseball and softball teams both went 1-1 at a tournament in Yreka on Friday.
Both squads are now 2-1 for the season and play for 3rd place this morning.

The Del Norte High boys tennis team nearly earned its first win of the year, falling in the last doubles match of the day to lose 5-4 to Fortuna on Thursday at home.

“We had really strong performances from everyone,” head coach Kirk Olesen said.

The young squad lost all eight starters from last year, with very few players having high school tennis experience before the season began.

Despite the loss, Olesen said he has been pleased with his team’s progress.

“When they gain more experience we’ll start to win these type of games,” he said.

Bergquist fans 7 in 1-0 victory

Warriors earn win in first game of season

For the past few seasons it’s been a pitchers’ duel when Del Norte High and Gold Beach, Ore., meet in softball.

Wednesday was no exception as Del Norte came away with a 1-0 home victory in the squad’s first regular season game of the year.

Coming off a season in 2008 that ended with the Warrior softball team’s first ever North Coast Section title, the win on Wednesday was a nice way to kick off  the 2009 campaign.

Panthers pitcher Molly Hockema had six strikeouts and gave up only a single hit. But one hit was all the Warriors needed
Del Norte senior pitcher Alyssa Bergquist, who won all the team’s games last year, continued her dominance to start off the year.

Back in the swing of things

Coming off the best season in Del Norte High Warrior softball history in 2008, the expectations are high again this year.

But head coach Jackie Heuberger does not want these expectations to distract her team  so much that they lose sight of why they go out and play softball — to have fun.

“I don’t want that,” she said. “I want them to still have fun.” She added that at the end of the day, win or lose, if the girls work hard as a team and have a good time, she’s happy.

“We do have a lot to live up to,” senior third baseman Michelle Stacey said. “We just have to focus and have fun.”

In 2008, Del Norte went 22-3 and won the Big 5 Conference title for the second straight year.
