Warrior girls fall at Redding tournament

REDDING —  A terrific first quarter did not carry over to  the rest of the game for the Del Norte High girls varsity basketball team Thursday night.

Playing Enterprise High at the Enterprise Tournament the Warriors lost 61-36 after trailing only 18-17 in the first period.

Del Norte head coach Buzz McCulloch said that in the opening period his squad played tough defense, passed well and got open shots.

The second quarter was another story as the Warriors constantly turned the ball over and missed easy layups, their coach said, scoring only six points compared to 18 for the Hornets. For the game Del Norte turned the ball over 25 times. “In the second quarter we just fell apart,” McCulloch said.

In the second half the Hornets continued to dominate and pulled away for the win.

Del Norte is now 7-7 for the year. The Hornets improved to 8-3.

Lauryn Lesina led Warrior scorers with 18 points, 12 of them coming in the first quarter. Krista Haban finished with eight points. Lexie Nelson had four points and Michelle Stacey had three points. Jaclyn Hadfield had two points and Emma Wilson one point.

Del Norte plays at 5 p.m. today against Liberty Christian from Redding.

CRESCENT CITY — The  Del Norte High Warriors varsity basketball team could not pull out another close win at home Monday evening.

After winning by a point each the past two games, the Warriors fell to Little 4 power Hoopa 55-54.

With Del Norte up by as much as seven points in the fourth quarter, the Hoopa Warriors went on a run in the final  minutes, capped off  by a basket with three seconds left to give them the one-point win.

“It’s a bummer,” Del Norte head coach Scott Alexander said. “We had it and gave it away. It was lack of execution.”

Despite the loss, Del Norte Warrior seniors Cody Hoffman and Chris Davidson were bright spots.

Down 22-17 at the half, Del Norte went on a tear at the end of the third and most of the fourth, taking a 14-point lead at 50-36  in the middle of the fourth quarter. While Hoopa was able to whittle the lead down, Del Norte hung tough for the five-point win to improve to 7-6 for the year.

Del Norte head coach Buzz McCulloch commended his squad for playing well despite the lack of available players. With key contributors Jaclyn Hadfield and Krista Haban out sick and unable to play, the Warriors had to play the contest short two.  Two players, Lauryn Lesina and Kaylie Rook played the entire game.
