Del Norte High School graduate Lauryn Lesina has transferred to Southern Oregon University in Ashland, Ore., to play basketball for the Raiders.
Lesina, a 5-foot-9 junior guard, spent the past two years at College of the Siskiyous in Weed, helping the Eagles to a 23-4 record and an appearance in the third round of the California Community College Athletic Association state basketball championships. Lesina averaged 15 points and seven rebounds in the 2011–12 season, earning Golden Valley Conference Most Valuable Player and second-team all-state honors.
Southern Oregon, an NAIA school, finished 14-16 overall last season and seventh out of 10 teams in the Cascade Collegiate Conference (5-13 overall).

The Del Norte Sunrise Rotary conducted its Dictionary Golf Tournament on Saturday, May 26, at Del Norte Golf Course. Proceeds from the event went toward buying dictionaries for all third-grade students in Del Norte County.
The foursome of Joe Collins, Zachary Lorenz, Brian Clemann and John Leuthold won first place in the team competition. A.C. Field, Paul Martinez, Wayne Franklin and Tomas Garcia finished in second place. Rich Harper, Bob Lawrence, Bobby Rice and Brent Hoskinson combined to take third place.
Lorenz had the day’s Long Drive, and Gary Wolfe (third hole), Bobby Sarina (fifth), Hoskinson (12th) and Bhanu Patal (14th) earned closest-to-pin honors.

 Submitted Richard England Jr. of Crescent City (second from left in photo) took second place in the Novice Boys (ages 11–12) 130-pound freestyle wrestling division at the U.S.A. Wrestling California Freestyle State Championships, held June 1–3 at Selland Arena in Fresno.
Richard Jr., 12, a sixth-grader at Redwood Elementary School, won his first three matches in the tournament before losing in the final. His performance qualified him for a spot at the U.S.A. Wrestling West Kids & Cadet Regional Championships, to be held June 17–23 in Pocatello, Idaho.

‘We’re looking at going after a (Big 5) league title next year’
 Mike Ernest, who was hired in April as head coach of the Del Norte High School girls’ basketball team, will become the dean of students at Castle Rock Charter School for the 2012–13 academic year. Ernest was previously the head girls basketball coach at McKay High School in Salem, Ore. Del Norte Triplicate/Bryant Anderson Mike Ernest is bringing the Del Norte girls basketball program back to basics.
Not fundamentals — dribbling, passing and shooting will come later. Ernest, who was hired in April as the Warriors’ newest coach, is instilling the building blocks of individual and collective responsibility within his players in off-season meetings and workouts.
“The number one belief we went over is coachability,” Ernest said. “Number two is selflessness. Number three is discipline.”
Del Norte won 20 percent of its games over the past two seasons (8-32 overall) and has won five Big 5 Conference games in the past seven seasons.

Chinook salmon bite in Klamath ‘marginal at best’
 Gary Engelke of Cloverdale holds up a chinook salmon caught in the Klamath River. Submitted Ocean fishing continues to produce, and Klamath spring salmon are still MIA. A series of low tides continues into the weekend that should make for good gathering of shellfish.
Today there will be a -1.8 tide at 8:41 a.m., a -1.2 at 9:29 a.m. Friday and a -0.5 on Saturday, according to saltwatertides.com.

DN grads Travis and Michelle Stacey play first seasons in D-I baseball, D-II softball
 After walking on to the BYU baseball team following his Del Norte High School career, Travis Stacey, left, played in one game for the Cougars. Michelle Stacey, right, also a Del Norte High graduate, played nine games for Division II BYU-Hawaii this season. Submitted In the summer of 2011, Travis and Michelle Stacey put in the hard work.
The two siblings and Del Norte High School graduates were preparing for the next steps of their athletic careers, Travis as a freshman walking on to the Brigham Young University baseball team and Michelle in her junior season with Division II BYU-Hawaii softball after two years at College of the Redwoods.
They hit ground balls to each other in the backyard of their parents’ Crescent City home. They lifted weights in the garage. They worked together and leaned on each other for support.

DN senior throws 40-0 on third attempt
 Del Norte senior thrower Morgan Laney. Del Norte Triplicate/Bryant Anderson Morgan Laney made the final throw of her Del Norte High School track and field career count for a lot at the California Interscholastic Federation State Track Meet, held at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis.
Laney, the Warriors’ school record holder in the shot put, finished 12th overall in preliminary competition with a put of 40 feet even, two inches off her personal best. She fell short of a top-nine placement, which would have enabled her to compete in the event finals on Saturday.
“I feel pretty good,” Laney said. “I was really happy to be one of the 40-foot shot putters. (Throwing that distance) was what I wanted to do. It went pretty well.”

The Crescent City Fourth of July 5K Walk and 5K/10K Fun Run will take place Wednesday, July 4. The course will begin on Pebble Beach Drive, at the first turnout south of Washington Boulevard, and end at Beachfront Park. The course is mostly flat with slight elevation changes.
Cost to participate is $20, including a T-shirt; kids age 12 and under will not be charged a participation fee but must pay for a T-shirt.
