Golfers competed both individually and as teams in a best-shot format. Local golf enthusiast James Haban shot the lowest score of the tournament, a 7-under par 135, to take home the individual championship by gross score after finishing second last year.
“Us locals are very thankful to have such a wonderful tournament at our club,” Haban said. “We look forward to all the great out-of-town players and families who come and celebrate/remember Mr. Speer during this week in June. Competition is always good, and it was great to play well in the mix.”
Stetson Olsen followed closely behind Haban, taking second place with a score of 137. Jim Bennett was third with a gross score of 139 and Derick Friebel was fourth with 140.
Last year’s gross individual champion, Bill Speer IV, finished fifth in the gross standings in 2014 with a score of 143. Speer IV is the son of William “Bill” Walter Speer III, for whom the tournament is named, and the grandson of William Walter Speer II, two of the original founders and owners of Del Norte Golf Course.
Although Speer IV was born and raised in Redding, he is a regular at the tournament named after his late father.
Josh Stark of Redding took home the individual championship by net score with a round of 125 after handicaps were factored in. Jim Bennett of Redding took second with a net score of 131. Israel Chavez was the top local golfer by net score with a 132. Eight golfers finished tied for fifth place with a net score of 133, including Marty Crouse, Jon Errek, Dan Kane, Mark Lincoln, Ted Holcomb, Dick Jacob, Gary Hix and Kevin Baxter.
