2 DNHS golfers qualify for championship

Polidore and Morrow place at NCS qualifier in the Bay Area

Despite challenging playing conditions, two Del Norte High golfers have qualified for the Northcoast Section Championships.

Seniors Luke Polidore and James Morrow placed 5th and in a tie for 10th at the Northcoast Section Division I qualifier at the Sunol Valley Golf Club in the Bay Area on Monday.

The top 12 individual placers qualified for the NCS  Tournament of Champions in Contra Costa on Monday.

Polidore shot a 78 and Morrow finished with a score of 80. Christian Cain, who qualified for the NCS championships last year as a sophomore, finished with an 89.

Head coach Kirk Burrows said that this was the first time in his 10 years as golf coach  that two Warriors qualified for the NCS championship in the same year.

“We’re pleased for these two,” Burrows said.

The conditions were quite “tough” he said, with conditons quite windy to go along with a challenging course.

Morrow added that “the greens were really fast,” so he had to adjust to the type of conditions the course presented.

Being able to adjust was a key reason he was able to qualify, Morrow said.

The day before, the team played a practice round at Sunol, which they had never played at before.

“That practice round sure was important,” he said.

Fellow Warrior Morgan Fischer finished the day with a 101. Del Norte golf players Anthony Kravitz and Dillon Wright did not participate due to personal reasons, Burrows said.

The entire Warriors team earned the right to play in the NCS qualifier by coming in second overall in the Humboldt-Del Norte Conference.

Polidore took second overall in the HDN while Morrow came in 7th to earn White Star honors.

Morrow was ecstatic that he and Polidore both made it to the Tournament of Champions.

“It will make it more fun,” he said. “If only one of us made it the drive down would have been more boring.”
