The sun was shining and the weather warm as participants from across California and Oregon and as far away as Sweet Springs, Mo. took a late Saturday morning run through the Redwood forest this weekend.

The annual Redwood Wild River Run, starting in Hiouchi and going into Jedediah Smith, drew in a record 272 participants in 2014, breaking the attendance record.

Run organizer Ralph Hirt thought the weather helped bring out a lot of people on race day, which pushed an already large preregistered group into record numbers.

“We had an absolutely gorgeous day. It couldn’t have been better really,” Hirt said. “It affects our race-day signup. Mainly local people wait to see what the weather is going to be like. If it is pouring down rain it affects our signups.”

Del Norte cross country runner Lupe Gonzalez, 17, was the fastest female, getting 22:14 in her first time in the run.

“It was really cool,” Gonzalez said. “I didn’t think I would win, because I had never done it before. There were a lot of girls out there. It was a lot of fun.”

Gonzalez, who is now running track for Del Norte High School, took advantage of an off weekend with the high school team to compete in a new kind of event.

“I missed cross country and I missed 5k’s so I thought it would be really fun to go out there and try it again,” Gonzalez said.

Connor Trump, 15, of McKinleyville won the men’s 5-kilometer race with a time of 18:02.

In all, 176 people ran the 5-kilometer race.

In the 15-kilometer race, Thomas Sanchez, 25, of Arcata led the pack, finishing in 54:07:00. Sailor Hutton, 14, of Bandon was the fastest female, completing the course in 1:01:36.
