MCKINLEYVILLE Three members of the Del Norte High girls tennis team made it to the finals in their respective divisions at the Humboldt-Del Norte Conference Championship tournament on Saturday in McKinleyville.
No. 1 seed Emma Wilson and No. 4 seed Lauren Godla lost, while No. 2 seed Rebecca Cink did not complete her match due to darkness.
The match will be completed on Friday before the start of the HDNC Championships in doubles.
Wilson started the day by defeating Chisa Hughes of North Coast Prep 6-1, 6-1.
In her second match, Wilson downed Katie Erickson of Arcata 7-6 (7-4), 6-1. In the finals she met Catherine Macan of St. Bernard's. They both met in the finals last year, with Wilson winning that match.
This year she fell to Macan 4-6, 4-6.
Wilson was up 3-0 in the first set when Macan started getting her down the line shots in and pulled out the set at 6-4. Emma was down in the second set 1-4, then came back to 4-4, but lost the next two games to lose the match.
"She played excellent tennis," Warriors head coach Jane Rumiano said about Wilson. "It just wasn't good enough to win the match against Catherine."
Cink, the No. 1 seed in her division, had a round one bye. In round two, she defeated Fortuna's Niki Green 6-4, 6-1.
In the finals against Ashley Balke of Arcata, the game was at 5-7, 6-2 when the sun set.
In the No. 3 division, Jennifer Gustafson fell to Lian Mitlyng-Day of Arcata 3-6, 6-4, 3-6
Godla defeated Haley Connors-Keith of North Coast Prep 6-1, 6-4 in her first match.
In her second match, she won against Vivi Smith of Eureka 6-4, 6-2. In the finals she lost to Molly Ryan of Arcata 1-6, 4-6.
"She hit great forehand winners and aced a number of serves to get to the finals, where she struggled in the first set, turned it around in the second, but then lost the match," Rumiano said.
In the No. 5 seed division, Ashleigh Speaker defeated Ashley Wickham of McKinleyville 6-2, 6-1 in the first round. In the second round, she lost to Elise Adams of Eureka 3-6, 7-6 (8-6), 2-6.
In the No 6. division, Kelsy Hintz, the No. 1 seed, had a first round bye. In the second round, she lost to Tara Matruolo of Eureka 4-6, 1-6.
"I was impressed with all of the players," Rumiano said. "Some of them didn't have their best matches of the season, but they kept trying to figure out a way to win. Even though they weren't successful, they came off the courts knowing that they did all they could to win."
The HDNC doubles completion starts at 10 a.m. Friday at McKinleyville High School.
