29th Annual Crescent City Triathlon, to be held Sunday, sees early boost in sign-ups

The distances remain the same: 500 yards of swimming, 12 miles of biking and 3.1 miles of running.

The enthusiasm for the Crescent City Triathlon is growing over time.

The triathlon already has 70 participants signed up for the 29th iteration, which begins Sunday at 8:30 a.m.

“We usually get 20 or 30 on Saturday and Sunday to turn out,” race director Russ Burnette said. “It’s looking pretty good.”

Much will remain the same from triathlons in Crescent City’s past. To start, continuing with tradition, teams of two or three may participate in the triathlon alongside individuals.

The race begins with a lap-swim in Fred Endert Municipal Pool; swimmers enter the pool in waves, during which their start time will be recorded. The bike ride goes out and back along Pebble Beach Drive and across Washington Boulevard, from Point St. George out toward Del Norte High School.

Upon returning to Endert Pool, the run circles the perimeter of Beachfront Park, extending out to A Street and the B Street Pier, which runners will traverse along and back.

The kids’ triathlon enters its 10th year of existence at 11 a.m. Sunday, inviting children ages 5–12 to test their mettle in multiple disciplines. Distances are as follows:

• Ages 5–6: 50-yard swim, 1-mile bike ride, 0.25-mile run

• Ages 7–8: 50-yard swim, 2-mile bike ride, 0.5-mile run.

• Ages 9–10:

• Ages 11–12: 100-yard swim, 6-mile bike ride, 1-mile run

The biggest change from the event’s 2012 iteration is the elimination of the duathlon event — a 1.25-mile run, a 12-mile bike ride and an addition 3.1-mile run. Seven participants entered the duathlon in 2012, according to  Burnette.

“There just wasn’t enough interest in the past, although this year we’re getting all kinds of calls about it, which is kind of curious,” Burnette said. “It’s basically trying to organize a third race on top of the triathlon and the kids’ triathlon.”

Sign-ups continue Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Endert Pool and at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday. Adult competitors are required to meet at 8 a.m., before the 8:30 a.m. start time. Kids are required to meet at 10:30 a.m. for their 11 a.m. start time.
