MCKINLEYVILLE The Del Norte High girls varsity volleyball team pulled out a four game victory against McKinleyville on the road Thursday night to end the regular season.
The Warriors defeated the Panthers, a fellow Big 5 Conference member, 25-12, 17-25, 25-15, 25-22.
Del Norte finished the regular season 20-8 overall and 8-0 in the Big 5. Last week, they sealed up the conference title. This is the 19th straight year the team has either had sole possession of the Big 5 crown or shared the title.
Head coach Meagan Curtis said her team played well in the first and third games.
"We were totally playing our game," she said.
The squad was off in the second game and let the Panthers gain the win.
"Our concentration level went down," Curtis said. "Our flow of the game wasn't smooth."
In the fourth game, the Warriors were playing well and had a six- point lead when McKinleyville came back and was able to keep it tight until Del Norte pulled away. Curtis said they started to play inconsistent again and let the Panthers back into the contest.
"If you let a team in, they're going to score some points on you," Curtis said, adding this can not happen in the playoffs if her team wants to win. "If we let a good team in they're going to run all over us."
In their first meeting on Oct. 16 in Crescent City, the Warriors squeaked by the Panthers in five games.
Next for the Warriors is the North Coast Section playoffs. Where and who Del Norte will play will be announced on Nov. 11, with games starting on the 13th.
Deja Hartwick had 22 assists, five aces and nine kills for Del Norte. Krista Haban had three blocks for kills, five kills and nine digs.
Ashley Owen had 13 kills and Jaclyn Hadfield had five kills. Mary Timoshenko had nine digs and Jessica Morrow and Tabitha Hillman had eight digs each.
The Warrior junior varsity team won the Big 5 JV title with a three game win against the Panthers. The team won 25-10, 20-25, 15-11.
