The Del Norte High softball team started the season in grand fashion, dominating Bandon on the road in doubleheader action Saturday.
In the first game, the Warriors crushed Bandon 10-1. The domination continued in the second game, as Del Norte cruised to a 13-3 win.
Top-notch pitching, as well as strong hitting, greatly helped matters for the Warriors.
In the first game, McKenzie Holden made a very strong showing, gaining an impressive 14 strikeouts. Fellow pitcher Alyssa Bergquist followed with nine batters struck out in the win in the second game.
"The other team couldn't catch up," head coach Jennifer Heuberger said, praising her two pitchers for their strong pitching. "They did really well."
Although she was nervous pitching her first game of the season at first, Bergquist said it was nice to get back on the mound against.
"You get out there, and it's fun," she said.
Holden said she was pleased the team started the season with two wins.
"It was a really nice way to start the season," she said. "We really wanted to win our first game. It helps boost you up a little bit."
Heuberger was pleased with the strong start, saying she was "happy with the girl's" performance, although she emphasized her team still has room for improvement and needs to continue to work hard throughout the season. The squad was also solid in the outfield, although they did make a few fielding errors.
Other players who did well include Gabby Navarro, who hit a double in the second game and Michelle Stacey, who had several hits in both games. Jennifer Gustafson hit a double in the second game.
Heuberger was glad a lot of the girls on the team were able to play during the games, to see what they are capable of and to give them valuable game experience early in the season.
Weather permitting, the Warriors head to Cave Junction, Ore., to play Illinois Valley today for a game.
