The Del Norte boys golf team shot themselves into a solid fifth place finish at a golf event at the Del Norte Golf Course Golf Course on Thursday.

Head coach Kirk Burrows said he was impressed with the team's solid progress from their first match of the year on March 5 and from last year. He said the progress has been nice to see. The players have also been pleased with the progress they have made and have worked hard to improve their scores the more they play.

"It was good to see the kids smiling," Burrows said. "They were happy."

A few of the players broke 90 for the first time in competition, which Burrows said will help boost their confidence as the season goes one.

On March 5, the Warriors opened the season at a tournament at the Redwood Empire Golf Country Club in Fortuna and finished in fifth.

At the match at the Del Norte Golf Course, nine teams participated. McKinleyville earned top honors.

For the Warriors, the top score was garnered by Trevor Johnson, who shot a 85.

Ryan Dorosz Jr. had a score of 86, while Cole Leslie shot a 87. Kevin Janerio shot a 92, and Chris Davidson earned a 93.

Nyke Newton earned a score of 97, while Nico Askew shot a score of a 100.

The team next plays on Tuesday at the Willow Creek Golf Course in Hoopa.
