Bright spot in DN tennis loss |
Against a team that has dominated tennis on the North Coast for years, the Del Norte High boys squad had a breakthrough on Wednesday at home. While they lost 8-1 to the Tigers, who are on top of the standings in the Humboldt-Del Norte Conference, the Warriors earned a rare match win against Arcata. The No.1 doubles team of Brandon Ford and Daniel Escobedo defeated Stefan Backes and Ian Hunter 8-4. Warriors head coach Sara Miller said that the pair really stepped up their play on Wednesday and it paid off with a win. “My number one doubles played excellent,” she said. “I’m excited to see them play in the (HDN) doubles championships next week because I really think they have a chance at making it to the final round.” While Del Norte lost, Miller said she saw a lot of positives from her squad. “I was really happy with the way my team played,” she said. “Everyone fought for their points. I didn’t feel like any of my players gave any games away.” The loss dropped Del Norte to 7-3 for the year, with the team still having a shot at finishing the regular season in second place in the HDN. Today, weather dependent, the Warriors will face Eureka at home starting at 3:30 p.m. On Friday, Del Norte is scheduled to play Northcoast Prep at home at 3:30 p.m. On Saturday, the HDN singles championships will be on the docket. They are set to begin at 10 a.m. in Arcata. |
