Clinic concludes with tourney
More than 60 kids as young as six take partAfter three days of practice, more than 60 local youths had the opportunity to finally go out and play some golf at the Del Norte Golf Course. On Thursday, on the final day of the 2011 Warrior Jr. Golf Clinic, the kids, from 6 years of age to teens, took part in a scramble team tournament. All participants received shirts while the winning squads earned trophies for their efforts, said Cris Rice, the clinic organizer and the head girls golf coach at Del Norte High. “They did a really good job,” Rice said. “Everyone had a big smile on their face. They were thrilled to play in a tournament. It let them experience what it’s like playing a game on the golf course. They liked going out and competing.” A feature on the clinic ran in the Thursday edition of The Triplicate. The first-place squad in the 6-7-year-old Mighty Mights division, with a score of 12 in three holes, consisted of Molly Slayton, Isaiah Sherman, Katie Marx and Seth Sills. The first-place team in the 8-18-year- old division with a score of 22 in six holes was made up of players Saige Swan, Peyton Swan, Juliane Magarino, Amber Preston and Xavier Young. In the long drive competition for the boys, Austin Healy, 13, took first with a drive of 235 yards. In the long drive competition for the girls, his sister, Peyton Healy, 11, took first place honors, finishing with a drive of 140 yards. Rice thanked all the volunteers for their help working with the youth and for the golf course for donating the use of the facilities. He also thanked Champion Awards, which helped clean up the donated trophies and donated additional trophies for the event.
