Middle-school girls basketball teams from across Del Norte County began play in the Crescent City Jaycees Tournament Friday at various sites across Crescent City.

Del Norte County’s lone representative in the AA Division, Crescent Elk A, lost to Hydesville Grammar School, 42-23. The Cougars play at 9 a.m. today at the Del Norte High School small gymnasium.
In the A Division, Redwood Red defeated Monument Middle School of Rio Dell, 34-25. The Raiders advance to a divisional semifinal game at 12:45 p.m. today at Foursquare Church’s gymnasium.
Smith River, also competing in the A division, lost to Cuddeback Elementary School in Humboldt, 44-20. The Wildcats will play at 9 a.m. today at Foursquare.
Klamath River Early College of the Redwoods, fielding a Jaycees Tournament team for the first time in school history, lost its first game to Douglas City Elementary School, 44-20. The Eagles play at 9 a.m. today at Crescent Elk Middle School.
Scores for Crescent Elk B’s B Division game against Upper Lake Middle School, Redwood White’s C Division contest against McCloud Elementary School and Uncharted Shores Academy’s game against Burnt Ranch School were unavailable at press time.
