A diverse range of participants – from children to seniors, are ready to run, bike and swim at the 23rd annual Crescent City Triathlon.

The event, put on by Wild Rivers Multi Sports, will be held on Sunday, August 12.

Those who are interested in participating can sign up until the day of the race.

Co-director Shawn Burke said the triathlon is being set up like a national event by a Portland, Ore., based company and will give participants an opportunity to take part in a triathlon that goes through the beautiful scenery of Crescent City's beaches.

Many people, especially those from out-of-town, rave that it's one of the nicest locations to do a triathlon, Burke said.

Also, each participant will be given a small chip that will be worn on the ankle. It will measure the exact time a participant completes each part of the triathlon.

Burke said events like this are a great way to motivate people to get in shape and be healthy.

A popular event is the kids triathlon,

"We make it a family affair," Burke said, and added many parents and children compete together. And for those who do not want to swim, the event offers a duathlon which consists of a 1 mile run/walk, a 12-mile bike ride and a 3.1-mile run/walk.

The triathlon is sponsored by about 40 different sponsors, which Burke said is critical to funding the event and making it a success.

Check-in is from 6 to 8 a.m, at the Fred Endert Pool. A mandatory pre-race meeting is poolside at 8 a.m. and the first heat begins at 8:30 a.m. sharp.

The triathlon will consist of a 500-yard swim, a 12-mile bike ride and a 3.1-mile run/walk.

Helmets are required for cyclists. The kids triathlon has a mandatory meeting at poolside at 10:30 a.m., with a 11 a.m. start.

The adult entry fee cost $40 per person and $90 per team. the kids entry fee is $17 per person.

The fee includes a T-shirt. Awards for first, second and third place will be given to each individual and team members in each age group. All finishers will be eligible for random drawing prizes, with the participants needing to be present to win.

For the kids, everyone who finishers receives an award.
