Struggles getting shots to fall doomed the Del Norte High boys varsity basketball team Tuesday night.
Facing Big 5 Conference opponent Fortuna on the road, the Warriors scored only two points in the second quarter and lost, 49-35.
“I think we came out with good energy but we missed a lot of shots,” head coach Blaine Lopez said. “You just can’t do that against good teams.”
A highlight for the Warriors was the play of senior Darian Simpson. He finished with 17 points, including four three-pointers, and helped Del Norte come back in the third quarter. Sophomore Aaron Fitch also had a good game, finishing with 13 points. They combined for 30 of the team’s 35 points.
To start the contest, Del Norte took an early lead at 6-5 with about five minutes left. By the end of the quarter the Warriors trailed 12-10.
It became a defensive battle in the second quarter as neither team could score a field goal. The Huskies finally got a basket with around a minute left to take a 19-10 advantage. With around 40 second left Colby Japp scored a basket for the Warriors for its only points of the quarter, as the Warriors trailed at the half 23-12.
In the third quarter, with a little more than a minute left, Simpson drained two back-to-back three-pointers to reduce the Husky advantage to 33-26. By the end of the quarter Del Norte trailed 36-26 and was still in the contest.
At the start of the final quarter the Huskies made a three-pointer to deflate the Warrior comeback effort as Fortuna went on to the 14-point win.
Del Norte fell to 2-5 in the Big 5 and 6-13 overall while Fortuna improved to 5-3 in the Big 5 and 17-8 overall.
In freshman action, Del Norte won against Fortuna to remain undefeated for the season. The team has a chance to end the season with a perfect mark with a victory today at home. The junior varsity team fell to Fortuna on Tuesday night.
Del Norte ends the season at home today on senior night against the Arcata Tigers. The first time the two teams met Jan. 20, the Tigers earned a 62-42 victory.
Arcata, which shared the Big 5 title with Del Norte last year, will win the title outright this season if it defeats the Warriors tonight or if second place McKinleyville falls to Eureka.
The varsity game begins at 7:30 p.m. The freshman game is at 4:30 p.m. and junior varsity is set for 6 p.m. at Thunen Gym.
