DN Grizzlies win final two games at tourney

YAKIMA, Wash. — After losing its first three games at a tournament in Washington state, the Del Norte Grizzlies American Legion team engineered wins in its last two games this past weekend.

At the Firecracker tournament in Yakima, Wash., a wooden bat event, the Grizzlies defeated the GK Eagles 4-1 on Saturday. On Sunday, Del Norte downed a American Legion squad from Tacoma, Wash., 3-2 to improve to 8-17 for the season.

Against the Eagles, the Grizzlies scored first in the fourth inning to take the 1-0 lead.

In the sixth inning, Del Norte scored three more runs to seal the victory,

Kyler Davis pitched a complete game, giving up only three hits.

Davis also went 1-for-3 with a run. Kevin Walsworth also went 1-for-3 with a run.

Zach Hegelmeyer was 1-for-3. Logan Lesina scored a run, as did Jon Enos.

The next day against Tacoma, the Grizzlies were able to hold on to a 3-0 lead until the seventh inning, when Tacoma scored two runs.

Justin Yslas pitched a complete game and had five strikeouts and gave up six hits.

Walsworth went 2-for-3 with two runs. Evan O'Brien was 2-for-2, and Nate Bruder was 1-for-2 for the Grizzlies.

Del Norte next plays at a four-day tournament in Salem, Ore., starting on Thursday.

On Tuesday, the team plays a doubleheader at home against Southern Humboldt starting at 3:30 p.m.
