RED BLUFF — The seniors on the Del Norte High boys varsity baseball team had not won a single game at the season-opening tournament in Red Bluff their entire playing career.

That changed this past weekend as the squad went 1-for-2, defeating Shasta High of Redding in the third game 6-5.

Warrior head coach Pablo Lorenzi said it was a great confidence-booster to garner a win against top competition. He added that all three teams they met had already played several games and begin league play this week.

"We didn't quit," he said. "We got progressively better each game and it really fell in line against Shasta."

Friday night, Del Norte played against host Red Bluff and was defeated 10-1.

Lorenzi said it was their worst game and the team came out flat.

But on Saturday against Foothill, the Warriors came out sharp and took a quick 2-0 lead.

Foothill, a disciplined team that can get hits in a hurry, scored four runs in the fourth and never looked back as they won 7-2 against Del Norte.

Lorenzi commended his team for hanging tough and, even when down, giving maximum effort on the field and at the plate.

In the Warriors' final game against Shasta late Saturday afternoon, the team continued its strong start and took a 5-1 lead heading into the fifth inning.

But Shasta got hot with their bats and knotted things up 5-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Many times last season, in a situations like this, Del Norte faltered and lost several close games.

Lorenzi said it's crucial the team wins games like that, which is exactly what they did on Saturday.

It began with Tyler Travis getting walked and then a passed ball allowing him to go to second. He then stole third to put the winning run in scoring position.

Michael Young then got walked.

Chad Freeman proceed to hit a sacrifice bunt, which became a base hit as Travis made it home for the game-winning run.

"I think it shows we're on the right track," Lorenzi said about his team's performance.

Travis went 1-for-2 with three runs and an RBI against Shasta.

Young went 1-for 3 with a run and an RBI.

Freeman went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

Logan Lesina pitched five stronger innings with six hits, five strikeouts and one walk.

Weather permitting, the Warriors will play a double header against Ferndale today at 1 p.m. at home.
