The Del Norte High wrestling team took fourth overall at the Northcoast Section Redwood Empire dual meet championships in Lower Lake on Saturday.
“We had a really good showing,” assistant coach Clinton. “I was proud of how we did.”
The Warriors started the event by losing to Maria Carrillo 55-24. They next defeated Eureka 61-13 and won a tough 34-32 battle against Terra Linda and defeated Healdsburg 43-31. In the third place match, they faced Maria Carrillo again and lost for a second time 51-24.
Top performers for Del Norte were Jackson Evans, who went 4-1 at 132 pounds. Austin Moore also went 4-1. His lone loss came in double overtime to the No. 3 ranked wrestler at 220 pounds in the NCS. David Plechaty at 195 pounds also went 4-1 for the Warriors.
Also on Saturday, Warrior freshman Nicole Mattz had an excellent day on the mat. She took 5th overall at the NCS girls wrestling championships in the Bay Area in the town of Pittsburg. She narrowly missed going to state, which requires at least a 4th place finish to qualify.
This Saturday, the Warriors, who went undefeated in the regular season in the Humboldt- Del Norte Conference, will take part in the HDN Championships. This year the event is being held in Fortuna.
