DN boys hold on, beat St. B’s

After losing a seven-point lead in the first half, the Del Norte High boys basketball team roared back in the second half and closed out strong to defeat St. Bernard’s Catholic High, 59-50, Wednesday night in Eureka.

St. Bernard’s cut a late Del Norte (4-5 overall) lead to three points in the final minute, but the Warriors made 10 of 10 free throws down the stretch to keep the Crusaders at bay.

Seniors Doug Ovick and Sean DeArman shared the Warriors’ scoring lead with 13 points apiece. Gruden finished with 12 points (4-4 free throws).

The Del Norte High junior varsity team overcame a 20-5 halftime deficit for a 36-34 victory. The Warriors improved their record to 3-7 overall. Del Norte’s freshman team (5-1 overall) notched a 56-32 victory over St. Bernard’s in the night’s first contest.

A girls basketball game between Del Norte and Hidden Valley High of Grants Pass, scheduled for Tuesday evening, was canceled due to inclement weather.

Del Norte’s boys and girls basketball teams will spend Friday and Saturday at the Bandon Dunes Holiday Classic basketball tournament in Bandon, Ore. The Warriors girls play Friday at 3 p.m. against St. Mary’s of Medford; the boys face the St. Mary’s boys on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
