The Del Norte High boys basketball team heads back out on the road today as it prepares for its second Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 league game against McKinleyville.
The Warriors are off to a 7-5 start and have won three straight games, including their league opener against Arcata on Thursday.
McKinleyville has struggled early in the season and has a 4-11 record. The Panthers lost their first league game 75-58 at Eureka.
“They are a little bit younger,” Lopez said. “They lost some seniors last year, so they have some young kids playing.”
Despite their youth, Lopez expects a good effort from McKinleyville.
“They are well coached, just like everybody in our league, so they are going to do a good job,” Lopez predicted. “They are going to try to mix up defenses, they are going to try to trap a little bit, and they are going to shoot it. We are going to have to really make sure that we box out and we go rebound.”
Once again, the Warriors will be at a disadvantage in height. That is nothing new to Del Norte.
“We are going to be outsized again, so we have to out-hustle, outwork and try to do everything right to be there in the fourth quarter and hopefully have a chance to win it,” Lopez said.
The varsity game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. following the junior varsity game starting at 6 p.m. The freshmen will play at 4:30 p.m.
