MOUNT SHASTA Playing at a tournament in Mount Shasta, the Del Norte High girls varsity basketball team fell to Yreka for the second time this year on Friday.
The Warriors lost 54-38 to drop to 4-5 for the season.
In its second game of the season, Del Norte faced Yreka at a tournament and lost 60-31.
While disappointed with the loss, Warrior head coach Buzz McCulloch was pleased with the progress his team has made.
"It was a lot better," he said. "We battled."
The Warriors started off slow out of the gate, unable to contain the Miners offense and went cold from the floor. By the end of the first quarter, Del Norte found itself down 17-3 and had trouble making its shots.
"It just killed us," McCulloch said. "We couldn't buy a basket.
By the end of the half, Del Norte was down 33-11.
In the second half, McCulloch said his team started to play better on defense and started to make its shots. In the fourth quarter they scored more points than Yreka.
Sophomore Lauryn Lesina led Del Norte scorers with 19 points, including three three-pointers. Junior Lisa Daniels had five points.
On Thursday, in the opening game of the tournament, Del Norte defeated River Valley 52-40. Today the Warriors will play against either Mount Shasta or Mercy.
