For the second year in a row, the Del Norte girls basketball team is headed to the championship game of the Yreka Tournament.
The Warrior girls blew by Klamath Union from Klamath Falls 56-35 in the first round of the tournament on Thursday. Del Norte was supposed to face St. Mary’s in the semifinals, but they pulled out, so the Warriors instead played Weed.
Del Norte struggled for much of the game against Weed, but the Warriors were able to pull out a victory to earn a spot in the finals against Brookings-Harbor.
“Today we came out sluggish for most of the game,” said head coach Jeff Cook. “We finally took advantage of some turnovers late and our free throws really helped us today.”
Brookings reached the championship game by beating Yreka Friday. The finals tip off at 4:30 p.m.
Cook said he expects Brookings to provide a difficult test for Del Norte. Although the Warriors are still undefeated, Cook has seen a lot of room for improvement.
“We definitely need more practice,” he said. “ We are still way behind.
Meanwhile, the Del Norte boys rallied after losing to Brookings on Thursday to beat Klamath Union on Friday. Scores were not available at press time. The Warrior boys will play in the third-place game on Saturday.
The Del Norte girls improve to 3-0 in the young season and the boys are now 1-1 overall.
