DN girls tennis resumes play Sat.

Beginning on Saturday morning, Del Norte High will, once again, have a girls tennis program.

Longtime Warriors coach Jane Rumiano was hired Friday,  according to Del Norte athletic director Bob Hadfield. The Warriors will take to their home courts on Saturday at 10 a.m. against Fortuna for their first match after an 11-day suspension of the program.

Rumiano’s hiring came three days after Max Sweeney — a 2005 Del Norte High graduate hired on Aug. 14 after a months-long vacancy — resigned the position. Parents of some of the  players complained about his use of profanity and behavior during matches.

Del Norte completed two full matches — defeating McKinleyville on Sept. 8 and losing to Eureka on Sept. 11 — and forfeited two others, against Arcata (scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15) and North Coast Prep of Eureka (scheduled for Tuesday). Sweeney resigned following the match against Eureka.

The Warriors fielded an eight-person roster for their first two matches after opening the school year Sept. 4 with five rostered players, one fewer than the minimum required to play a full team match.
