DN grapplers compete at event in Ukiah |
Despite a few starters unable to attend due to injury, the Del Norte High Warriors wrestling team performed well at a tournament in Ukiah on Saturday. Freshman Nicole Mattz won the girls portion of the event, going 3-0. Sophomore Robert Boulby took fourth at 145 pounds. He narrowly lost the semifinals match and was injured, assistant coach Clinton Schaad said. While it was not serious, Schaad said they decided to have him forfeit the 3rd place match so he would not risk further injury. Sophomore Hawk Mattz at 140 pounds lost his first match by a single point to the eventual champion. He won his next four matches to take fifth place. Sophomore David Plechaty took 5th place at 195 pounds. At 160 pounds senior Lakey Coney took 6th place. The next two weeks are big ones for the Warriors. On Saturday, they will take part in the Northcoast Section Redwood Empire dual meet championships in Lower Lake. The Warriors earned the right to compete in the NCS by going undefeated in the regular season of the Humboldt-Del Norte Conference. The next Saturday, Del Norte will take part in the HDN championships in Fortuna.
