MCKINLEYVILLE The Del Norte High wrestling team grappled its way to a 60-18 dual meet win against McKinleyville on the road.
The team had several pins during the Wednesday evening meet.
Jordan Lacy (103), Joey Kravitz (135), Matt Valdez (145), Kai Lemrise (160), James Sampier (215), and Jake Young (285) all won by first round pin. Colton Cooper (140) won by third round pin.
Roger McCovey normally wrestles at 285 but was given a night off to rest and give other wrestlers a chance to take the mat and gain experience.
The team also wrestled against grapplers from Hoopa.
Jennifer Skinner (130) won by fall in the first period.
The junior varsity wrestlers also performed well against the Panthers, winning all four matches by pin in the first period. The wrestlers were Thor Hadfield (140), Chad Bond, (125), Daniel Buchanan (189) and Leo Bissette (171).
Del Norte assistant coach Clint Schaad commended the wrestlers for their fine all-around performances and for being physical.
"The kids were really aggressive and went after it," he said.
He added the junior varsity team exceeded expectations by their performance and commended them for wrestling well.
The Warriors next take part in a tournament in Eureka on Saturday against 16 other teams.
Schaad said this will be the first tournament with a full varsity squad. Previously, injury, illnesses and vacation have depleted the team.
"This tournament should be a good benchmark for us," he said.
