DNHS boys tie 2-2 with McKinleyvile

First game of the year for Warriors

The Del Norte High boys soccer team opened the season on the road with a 2-2 tie against fellow Humboldt-Del Norte Conference opponent McKinleyville Wednesday night.

On the girls side, the Warriors lost their season opener to the Panthers 5-0 on the road.

David Sanyaolu, the boys soccer head coach said that Del Norte had five scoring chances, including a one-on-one situation between the McKinleyville goalie and a Warrior player, but could not capitalize.

He said that the team must do a better job of taking advantage of scoring chances when they arise.

“It was a good game but it was one we could have won,” he said. “We know we can do better.”

The Panthers struck first with a goal in the 26th minute of the first half. Del Norte bounced right back when Jesus Herrera scored on an assist by Jorge Ramirez in the 36th minute.

About 20 minutes into the second half of play,  Del Norte struck again when Jose Ramirez scored on an assist by Ian Roy.

While Del Norte had hope to come away with the win, McKinleyville was able to score with around five minutes left to earn the tie.

Del Norte next plays at home on Wednesday at 5 p.m. against Eureka.

Sanyaolu is looking forward to that contest and believes that with more consistency his team can compete and win against Eureka, which has fielded good teams in the conference for a number of years.

The girls squad also faces Eureka at home next Wednesday.
