The Del Norte AAU Program kicked off its basketball season on Saturday at the South Coast Sharks Shootout in Coos Bay.

Eighth grade girls AAU coach John Horner estimated there were 40-50 schools in attendance at the tournament with five to six teams in each division.

Del Norte had six teams finish in the top four of their respective divisions, led by the sixth-grade boys team, which came away with a first-place finish in their division.

“My team just caught fire and we never looked back again,” said sixth grade boys head coach Frank Dowd.

The sixth graders were able to earn a championship against a North Bend team that the Warriors were eager to get another shot at.

“They beat us in the championship game here last year,” Dowd said. “So we have been waiting for a long time for that game.”

Del Norte’s Omar Banuelos was named the boys sixth-grade tournament MVP. Damian Dowd and Kobe Mitchell were both all-tournament selections.

The eighth-grade boys, the fifth-grade girls and sixth-grade girls all made their championship games but finished second overall.

The seventh- and eighth-grade girls both took fourth in their respective divisions.
