Warriors resilient in 6-3 game one win, offense goes cold in 3-0 loss to Fortuna in game two

The Del Norte baseball team split a doubleheader at home against Fortuna on Friday after over a week without a game.

The Warriors used a big fourth inning to pull out a 6-3 victory in game one. In the second game, Del Norte had trouble getting its offense back on track, falling 3-0 to the Huskies.

Del Norte had to dig itself out of a couple early holes in game one. Fortuna jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Warriors were able to tie the game up in the second inning on an RBI single from senior Dylan Pease that scored senior Chris Bray.

The Huskies pulled back ahead by a run in the top of the third, but junior Steven Maready was able to bring sophomore Austin Healy around to score with single.

In the top of the fourth inning, Fortuna once again grabbed the lead with another run to make the score 3-2. Del Norte was able to wrestle control of the game away from the Huskies in the bottom of the inning however.

Bray led off the the Warriors, batting in the six spot. Senior Casey Nelson got on base after being hit by a pitch and senior Cole Bellatti poked a single to tie the game back up and send it back to the top of the order with just one out. Del Norte went on to score four runs in the inning to take their first lead of the game — one the Warriors would never relinquish.

“It was huge to have the bottom of the order get on base for our leadoff hitters,” said Del Norte head coach Travis Johnson.

Jonathon Calderon picked up the win, pitching all seven innings, giving up three earned runs on five hits. Calderon walked five batters, hit two more and struck out three.

In the second game, the Del Norte offense had trouble hitting its stride. The Warriors were only able to get four hits against the Huskies in the second game, with no two hits coming in the same inning.

“We just couldn’t get any hits in a row,” Johnson said. “Their pitcher had good stuff. He was keeping the ball away and keeping us off balance a little bit. We had a couple kids hitting him, but overall we just couldn’t get anything going.”

Fortuna took the lead in the third inning when the Huskies followed up back-to-back walks with a two-RBI double. Fortuna added another run in the fourth inning for a 3-0 lead.

Maready got the start for the Warriors in game two. He pitched all seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He walked five batters and hit two more while striking out four.

Fortuna and Del Norte move into a tie for second place. The Huskies, 15-7 overall, are now 6-4 in Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 league standings. The Warriors are now 3-2 in the HDN and 11-4 overall.

Arcata is currently in first place with a 4-2 HDN record.

Del Norte will be busy next week as they prepare to play four games in three days. The Warriors kick things off at home against Eureka on Tuesday. They will host McKinleyville on Wednesday and will travel to Eureka for a doubleheader on Thursday.

“We are going to have to have lots of pitching next week,” Johnson said. “We are going to have to go pretty deep just to get through that. Hopefully they are up for it and we can win as many of those games as we possibly can. Everybody is going to be in the same boat that we are in, playing a lot of games, so we will just do the best that we can.”
