When you hold your opponent to a single point in the second quarter, odds are you got the game well in hand.
That was exactly the case Thursday evening as the Del Norte High School boys basketball team dismantled Yreka 68-33 at the Rotary Warrior Classic.
"We played with a lot of intensity," Head Coach Blaine Lopez said. "Also, when you shoot the ball really well, it makes you look good."
Del Norte (5-3), came out strong, playing tenacious defense, crashing the boards, and making crisp passes to the open man, as the Warriors took a 19-12 first quarter lead.
The second quarter was even better for Del Norte, as the Miners could only muster a single point as the Warriors took a 41-13 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, it was more of the same, as a complete team effort led the Warriors to the win.
Offensively, the team made its shots and were patient, passing the ball until the open man was found.
On defense, whenever a Miner player had the ball, they swarmed to them, denying easy buckets.
Cody Hoffman led the Warriors in scoring with 15. Cliff VanHook had 10 points, while Bryce Lund, Michael Daniels and Sean Brock contributed eight points each.
Scott Redmond, one of the teams leading scorers and rebounders, was unable to play due to the flu. Lopez was unsure if he can play on Saturday.
Lopez is pleased with the progress he has seen the last two games and the way the team is starting to play together.
"We're definitely better today than we were last weekend," he said.
Lopez's brand of coaching is to emphasize team basketball and that no one player is more vital than the other players it's a team effort.
He said he's pleased to see his squad playing good, solid team basketball.
On Saturday, the Warriors play two matches. The first is a rematch against Yreka at noon. At 6 p.m., Del Norte is set to face Brookings/Harbor (Ore.).
This is the second game in a row the Warriors have looked strong.
Tuesday night, the Warriors had a good start to their tournament by soundly defeating Hoopa 76-42 in the first home game of the season.
The win was a welcome one for Del Norte, after coming off two losses at a tournament in Yreka. The Warriors did not face the Miners in the tournament.
In other action on Thursday, the Del Norte junior varsity squad cruised to a 48-9 win over Yreka. The Warrior freshmen boys were defeated by Hidden Valley 33-27.
After a break from games over the Christmas holiday, the varsity squad begins play again Dec. 28 at the Enterprise Tournament in Redding.
