The Del Norte High girls varsity basketball team fell to McKinleyville 48-30 at home Friday night.
While they lost by 18 it was an improvement over the first time the two teams met earlier this season when the Panthers handily won 55-27.
Emma Card led Warrior scorers with 13 points.
“I thought we gave a good effort but we were outmatched,” Del Norte head coach Buzz McCulloch said.
The first quarter went poorly for the Warriors as Mack jumped to a 12-0 advantage.
The Warriors did not make a basket until under a minute left when Shauna Ratnour scored to make things 12-2 after one quarter.
“They (McKinleyville) played good defense but it shouldn’t be so tough that we could only score two points in the first quarter,” McCulloch said.
In the second quarter the Panthers continued to score at will as the Warriors could do little to stop them or to get points on the board. With around three minutes remaining Mack had a comfortable 23-4 advantage. A three-pointer by Panhia Yang with 2:45 left gave the Warriors some life. At the half Del Norte trailed 27-10.
“We couldn’t make baskets and we couldn’t get into a flow,” McCulloch said.
In the second half, the Warriors played a bit better for a spell. With 5:45 left Card made a basket to cut the Panther lead to 28-16. Del Norte scored only two more points after that as McKinleyville had a commanding 44-18 lead after three.
In the fourth quarter, Del Norte started to shoot a bit better and were able to cut the lead to 18 by the time the buzzer sounded to end the game.
Del Norte dropped to 0-5 in the Big 5 and 3-14 overall. The Panthers improved to 14-6 overall and 4-1 in the Big 5.
In the freshman game, the Warriors lost to the Panthers 31-29. In the junior varsity game Del Norte lost 59-37.
On Wednesday, Del Norte faces Eureka at home.
The varsity game begins at 7:30 p.m. With the freshman game at 4:30 p.m. and JV at 6 p.m.
