Del Norte falls to Huskies
Lose 7-3 and 12-4 at homeThe Del Norte High softball team ended the 2011 season with two home losses to Fortuna on Thursday. The Warriors lost 7-3 in the first game to their fellow Big 5 Conference opponent. In the second contest Del Norte was tied with the Huskies 3-3 heading into the seventh inning. The Warriors proceeded to give up nine runs as they lost the final game of the year 12-4. Del Norte ends the season 3-8 in the Big 5 and 6-15 overall. “It was a tough season,” head coach Jackie Heuberger said. “I know the girls wanted more wins. I really hope it was a learning season for them.” In the first game, Del Norte found itself down 5-0 in the fourth inning. In the bottom of the inning the Warriors got things going when the first batter, Kirstyn Anderson, laced a single. By the end of the inning Del Norte had reduced the lead to 5-2. But the Warriors could not mount a comeback as they fell by four runs. In the second game the Warriors battled and looked like they had a chance to win with the score tied 3-3 in the top of the seventh inning. That’s when things started to go wrong. “I felt like we were going to win,” heading into the final inning, Heuberger said. “But then they scored seven runs before we even got a single out.” By the end of the inning Fortuna had produced nine runs to end any hope of a Warrior win. Heuberger said that her squad made too many costly errors, especially in the final inning of the second game, which has been a problem all season. Heuberger commended Anderson, Ayashe Padon and Chandler Davis for doing a good job of hitting the ball and getting several solid hits in both games. Before the first contest, members of the Warriors senior class were honored along with their parents. This year’s Del Norte seniors are Kristyn Rook, Lindsey Olson and Sarah Weiser. |
