The Del Norte volleyball team started off on the right foot Thursday night at home before falling to Arcata, which is undefeated in the Big 5 Conference.

The Warriors looked sharp as they downed the Tigers 25-18 in the first set, which gave the home fans a lot to cheer about.

“The first set was great and the players gave a very good effort,” Del Norte head coach Robyn Parker said.

There was not much to cheer about in the second set as Del Norte committed 13 service errors and fell 25-11.

While the Warriors played with more fight in the next two sets, it was not enough as they lost 25-19 and 25-23 to lose the match 3-1. In the fourth set Del Norte had an early 6-1 advantage before the Tigers roared back.

Down 17-10, Del Norte made a run and was down only 24-23 before the Tigers got the final point they needed.

Parker liked the way her girls battled back after a “frustrating” second set.

“It’s disappointing to lose but Arcata is the team to beat right now,” she said. “We lost but I  was pleased with the energy level  I saw from the girls.”

Keirstyn Anderson had nine kills, six digs and three aces for the Warriors.

Morgan Laney finished with seven kills and two blocks.

Ayashe Padon had two blocks and three kills. Kylee Bruder finished with three kills and two blocks.

Brittany Maready had six digs. Blaire Lopez finished with two aces and Chandler Davis and Shauna Ratnour each had two digs apiece.

Del Norte fell to 1-3 in the Big 5 and 7-12 overall. Arcata improved to a perfect 4-0 in the first half of conference play and 16-3 overall.

In the junior varsity contest, the Warriors lost in two sets to the Tigers 25-19 and 25-23 to drop to 2-2 in the Big 5.

The Del Norte varsity squad will play at a tournament in the Coos Bay, Ore., area today.

On Tuesday, Del Norte will face McKinleyville at home.
