The Del Norte freshman boys basketball team played its second and third games of the year this weekend at the Del Norte Freshman Jamboree.
The Warriors lost 51-40 to Fortuna in the first game and fell 43-37 to Brookings-Harbor in the second game.
Branden Throop led Del Norte in scoring with 11 points against Fortuna and 15 against Brookings. Doson Tweed added 10 points for the Warriors against Fortuna.
“Being the second and third games of the year, I think the intensity defensively is what we were really looking for,” said Del Norte freshman coach John Horner. “I think we were lacking a little bit, but the good thing was, I think we are as good as the two teams that we played.”
The Warriors are still in the early stages of the season. The main challenge through the first two weeks has been to meld together players from Redwood, Smith River and Crescent Elk middle schools.
“When you mold that many middle schools together, a lot of times the identity of the team is new to them, especially since we just started practicing together two weeks ago,” Horner said. “They are kind of getting used to playing together.”
The freshman team will play again on Friday and Saturday at the Foothill Tournament.
“This weekend is going to be a true test,” Horner said. “A lot of those kids over in Redding play a lot of travel ball. Those kids have been playing together for a while. We are going to be in for a tough weekend. But if we play hard and the intensity is there, we can beat anybody.”
