A barrage of three-pointers by Mt. Shasta was too much for the Del Norte High School girls basketball team to overcome, losing 60-51 Friday night.
The Warriors, (3-5), won Thursday evening 46-41 over Etna in the first round of the Mt. Shasta Tournament. They will face the loser of the Yreka-Weed game today at noon.
Mt. Shasta took a quick 19-12 first quarter lead, thanks to four three-pointers, two of them by Bears sharpshooter Libby Grace, who had eight threes in the game.
"They were hot from the outside," head coach Buzz McCulloch said. "When they start making them like that, you got to go out and guard them and we didn't get there quick enough."
While his squad lost the game, McCulloch said there were many aspects he was pleased with.
This includes scoring the most points in a game this season.
Rebounding and defense was solid, and the team continued to play hard, despite being down throughout the game, he said. Versus Etna, the Warriors turned the ball over 28 time. Friday night, they had 15 turnovers.
The problem, McCulloch said, was they just could not "get over the hump" of the Bears explosive first quarter.
Lauryn Lesina led Warrior scorers with 19 points, including four threes. Bailee McCulloch had 10 points, while Alyssa Luna had 8 points.
Del Norte next plays versus Hoopa on Jan. 3.
In girls junior varsity action, Del Norte won two games at a mini tournament in Hoopa on Friday, crushing the competition.
Versus South Lake Tahoe, the JV squad cruised to a 69-20 victory. The next game, versus Hoopa, the Warriors played great defense, not allowing Hoopa any points in the second half, as they romped to a 57-7 win.
The junior varsity boys team lost 42-41 to Marshfield at home Friday night.
