Del Norte girls lose final game

The last game of the season for the Del Norte High girls team ended with a 51-29 defeat to Eureka on the road Thursday evening.

The loss dropped the team to 6-16 for the year and 0-7 in the Big 5 Conference.

The game started off slowly for the Warriors, who encountered the same set of problems they have faced throughout the year – too many turnovers and shots not dropping in.

By the end of the first quarter, Del Norte was down 11-4. In the second quarter, despite holding the Loggers to only six points, Del Norte trailed 17-9.

For the half, the Warriors shot only three-for-17 from the floor and turned the ball over 19 times, with the squad turning the ball over on several consecutive plays.

"We were just throwing the ball away," head coach Buzz McCulloch said. "They didn't come out ready to play."

In the third quarter, Del Norte shot a little better, scoring 10 points, but allowed the Loggers to sink in 15 points.

In the fourth, the Warriors found themselves down by only 10, with McCulloch thinking his team had a chance to mount a comeback.

But it did not work out that way, as the Warriors allowed the Loggers to score eight straight points as the game got pulled out of reach.

For the contest, Del Norte shot a respectable 11-for-17 from the free throw line.

The Warriors turned the ball over 28 times in the game and shot eight-for-39 from the floor.

Sophomore Michelle Stacey led Del Norte scorers with six points.

Senior Kristie Gavin, senior Ronni Scott and junior Bailee McCulloch each scored five points.

The Loggers were led by Angela Fitzhugh with 12 points.

Kayanna Walstrand scored 10 points, while Brittany Vitale had nine points.
