Two nights after a disappointing loss to Gold Beach, the Del Norte High School volleyball team found its groove in Brookings.
The Warriors defeated the Brookings-Harbor High Bruins in four sets, 25-15, 25-23, 22-25, 25-17, on Thursday night to for their first win of the season (1-1 overall).
“It was a little bit different attitude,” Del Norte co-head coach Pablo Lorenzi said. “The goal for Brookings was to play more intense but with more enthusiasm, more communication. We did a pretty good job with that.”
Warriors junior Kaitlyn Clemann turned in a dominant performance with 16 kills, doubling her total from Tuesday night’s loss to Gold Beach.
“Kaitlyn is doing real well, stepping up to the plate,” Lorenzi said. “We’re asking her to step up to the plate and she’s doing good.”
Del Norte’s Ashton Smedley recorded eight kills and six blocks against the Bruins. Marissa Van Dyke added four kills and a block for the Warriors.
Del Norte seized control of the game from the start and never looked back, but for a letdown period in the third set.
“We tried some new things,” Lorenzi said. “We kind of dropped back to where we were Tuesday.”
Brookings-Harbor will be in Crescent City on Tuesday night for a rematch with the Warriors. The junior varsity game begins at 5:30 p.m.; the varsity game will follow.
Del Norte’s junior varsity squad will continue its season with a tournament in Phoenix, Ore., today.
