CRESCENT CITY — Getting contributions from the entire team, the Del Norte High varsity boys basketball squad cruised to a 61-41 win over St. Bernard's on Thursday in the Rotary Warrior Classic.

The win improves the Warriors to 5-0 for the year.

Del Norte roared out of the gate and took a quick 12-2 lead, playing suffocating defense that forced turnovers and gave the Crusaders very little chance to get good shots.

"I thought our defense was better, especially in the first half," Warrior head coach Blaine Lopez said. "It also helps when you make shots."

The first 12 Del Norte points were scored by senior guard Cliff Van Hook, who finished with 16 points, including four three-pointers, three coming in the first quarter.

By the end of the first period, Del Norte had jumped to a 15-4 lead.

The domination continued in the second half, as the Crusaders could not seem to get anything going as Del Norte continued to play stifling defense and shot decently from the floor. At the half, Del Norte was up 36-11.

For the majority of the third period and the entire fourth, the entire Del Norte bench saw playing time. Lopez said he was pleased the entire team saw game action and scored at least a point.

Lopez said he was happy with the bench players consistent play and the way they were able to maintain a healthy lead and gain vital playing experience.

Besides Van Hook, Senior Trevor Rook came off the bench and scored seven points. Junior David Mendoza and senior Chad Freeman had six points each.

With no games on Saturday, due to a recent cancellation (see box), Del Norte will next play in an away tournament in a far away location—in a magic kingdom in fact. They will take part In the Holiday Classic Tournament at the Walt Disney World sports complex in Florida next week.

Varsity games canceled on Saturday

Brookings High decided this week not to participate in junior high and varsity games at the Rotary Warrior Classic. Because of this, the Saturday varsity game against Del Norte at 6 p.m. has also been canceled. Warrior head coach Blaine Lopez said it was an administrative decision. Because of this, it was decided to also cancel the noon varsity game against St. Bernard's. The Saturday Freshman and JV games are still scheduled.
