Del Norte Triplicate/Bryant Anderson The Del Norte High girls and boys soccer teams competed in Humboldt-Del Conference action at home on Wednesday against Fortuna.
The boys lost to the Huskies 3-0 and the girls fell to Fortuna 8-0.
In the girls contest, Del Norte quickly fell behind against the Huskies, considered one of the top teams in the HDN.
The Warriors found themselves down 4-0 by the end of the first half.
The Huskies put in four more goals to end things at 4-0.
Del Norte was coming off two positive games. On Saturday they tied Brookings-Harbor 2-2 for their second tie of the year.
On Monday Del Norte finally earned win No. 1 of the year, downing South Fork 4-1.
Head coach Clar Byers said the girls gave a good effort but could not stop the Huskies attack.
On offense Del Norte had only a few scoring chances “and could just not get through their defense,” Byers said.
In the boys game the Huskies, who defeated Del Norte 7-3 earlier this year, leapt out to a 2-0 halftime advantage.
Fortuna put in one more goal in the second half.
Del Norte fell to 4-5-2 for the year.
Del Norte head coach David Sanyaolu said while his team did a solid
job against the Huskies their limited chances on goal hurt
them. Del Norte only took five shots on goal for the game.
“We did our best,” Sanyaolu said. “That’s all I can ask for.”
Both teams face Arcata on the road on Saturday, and both squads host
Ferndale at home next Wednesday, which will end the regular season for
the boys team. Byers said the girls team has just added one more game
and will face Illinois Valley at home on Nov. 1.
