The Del Norte High baseball team split a doubleheader against McKinleyville on Saturday, losing 4-3 in the first game, and exploding for five runs in the fourth inning of the second game for a 6-1 victory.

For the season, the Warriors are 8-9 overall and 2-4 in the Big 5 Conference.

The first game was going well until the bottom of the sixth inning, head coach Pablo Lorenzi said. Up 3-2 with two outs and a full count to the Panthers number nine hitter, the player hit a two run homer to give McKinleyville the lead and the eventual win.

Lorenzi said overall, the team played a good game, with strong pitching and good defense, although he believed the squad did not provide needed runs under pressure.

Lorenzi said four of the team's losses were by a margin of five runs.

He commended pitcher Logan Lesina for throwing a good game. He allowed only four hits and a walk with three strikeouts.

Kevin Walsworth went 2-for-4 with a run. Justin Yslas went 1-for-3 with a home run and two runs batted in.

Frankie Cardenas went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

In the second game, things did not start out great for Del Norte, who fell 1-0 in the first inning.

No runs were scored until the Warriors busted out in the fourth with a five run outburst on its way to the victory.

Lorenzi said he was pleased with how well his team hit and said he believes this is the way his squad needs to play more often.

"We put a game together that we should have been doing three weeks ago," Lorenzi said.

Evan O'Brien pitched a good game, giving up four hits and striking out three batters in five innings of work. He went 2-for-3 from the plate.

Walsworth pitched two innings, and gave up no hits. He also hit 2-for 4 with two doubles and a run.

Chad Freeman went 3-for-4 and Kyler Davis went 1-for-3 with three runs batted in.

The Warriors next play on Wednesday at home against Eureka at 4 p.m, weather permitting.
