Rain in the area threatened to cancel the meet, but the Warriors were able to triumph before any heavy rain began to fall.
“We were lucky to get in our match yesterday,” said Del Norte assistant coach Jane Rumiano.
The Warriors won five of their six singles matches and swept the three doubles matches.
“The boys all played well and are gaining confidence in their tennis games,” Rumiano said.
Del Norte has just two players on the squad that have played tennis competitively before, and many of the players picked up a racquet for the first time within the last three weeks.
While the Warriors were outgunned against an experienced Fortuna squad to open the season, against St. Bernard’s Del Norte played against a team closer to its own experience level.
“They played against a team that’s been playing about the same amount of time as we have, but it’s evident that the Del Norte team has put in a lot of effort into their practices,” Rumiano said.
In singles, Alex Westbrook won the top pairing 6-2, 6-1. Cemeron Douglas won the No. 2 matchup 6-0, 6-0. Ger Xiong won at No. 4 by a score of 6-1, 6-0, Lyndon Yang bested St. Bernard’s No. 5 player 8-4 and Sam Crisler won the No. 6 singles match 8-1.
It was the first singles victory in the careers of Xiong, Yang and Crisler.
In doubles, the Warriors won comfortably as Westbrook/Douglas, Sunni Vue/Xiong and Yang/Rocky Lo beat their doubles opponents by a combined score of 24-6.
“Both Coach (Jeff) Cook and I were really impressed with how much the whole team has improved since the last match, especially their serves,” Rumiano said. “They used good strategy to win points and played well together in doubles.”
The Warriors will be back out on the Del Norte Tennis Courts this Saturday for a weekend meet with North Coast Prep, a charter school in Arcata.
The meet is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
