returns after strong first season and works on putts
The strength of Siera Fitzhugh’s golf game is striking the ball over a couple hundred yards to within a few feet of the hole. So what is the Del Norte High sophomore working on in practice?
“Being better at putting,” she says with a laugh. “I’ve been working on my putting a lot.”
Fitzhugh is taking care not to let those last few feet beat her on the course. As a freshman, she was the Warrior girls golf team’s top performer in 2012, finishing ninth overall among Humboldt-Del Norte League individuals — two places shy of a White Star.
“Last year, putting just killed me,” Fitzhugh says.
Fitzhugh has set a goal to break 100 consistently this season, which would put her squarely in contention for a White Star.
“My drives are getting a lot straighter,” she says. “Irons are pretty good. I’m working on my chipping — it kind of went down but it’s getting better.”
Last season, the Warriors finished third in the HDN with a combined stroke total of 4,188, behind league champion McKinleyville (3,738 strokes) and Arcata (3,908).
Three returners, including Fitzhugh, have experience competing in high school golf, but the roster is in flux in 2013 with just five players.
Del Norte also has a new coach in Alison Eckhart, also a teacher at Del Norte High School. Cris Rice resigned from the position in the offseason.
Senior Brooke Trujillo is the most experienced returner to the Warriors. Trujillo finished 12th in the HDN in 2012. Morgan Gibson is the third returning player to the squad.
