First win bears out for Warriors

The Del Norte High boys basketball team is officially in the win column.

Two critical defensive stops late in the fourth quarter gave the Warriors a 42-40 victory over Brookings-Harbor High in the Brookings-Harbor Invitational, held Friday night at Brookings-Harbor High School.

“It was close for most of the game, back and forth,” Del Norte head coach Blaine Lopez said. “We played with much better effort. We’ve still got a ways to go execution-wise. (But) if they don’t play with that effort, we don’t win.”

Del Norte (1-3 overall) faces Phoenix (Ore.) High tonight at 6 p.m. at Brookings-Harbor High.

Two hundred miles away, the Del Norte High women’s basketball team made it to the championship game of the Mt. Shasta Tournament in Mt. Shasta.

The Warriors kicked off the tournament on Thursday night with a 59-23 win over Biggs High.

Del Norte started the game off sluggish before Brittany Maready caught fire. The senior scored 12 of her team-high 20 points in the second quarter to give the Warriors a 26-12 halftime lead, which more than held up the rest of the way.

“Brittany is a spark plug for the team,” Del Norte head coach Mike Ernest said. “When she’s feeling confident in her shooting, everyone’s feeling confident in their shooting.”

The Warriors continued their strong season-opening run against the tournament host, defeating Mt. Shasta, 53-41, on Friday night.

“We got off to a better start defensively (than against Biggs),” Ernest said. “Overall, we maintained our composure. We were able to execute offensively and defensively.”

Senior forward Emma Card “stepped up big and made good decisions tonight,” according to Ernest, in posting team highs of 16 points and 13 rebounds. It was her second double-double of the past three games.

Freshman Regin Loftin contributed 14 points and 8 rebounds for the Warriors, while Maready added 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds of her own.

Del Norte’s (4-2 overall) championship opponent will be Weed High, and the two will face off at 5 p.m. tonight in Mt. Shasta.
