Sophmore golfer has bright future
The Del Norte girls golf season officially came to a close at Beau Pre Golf Course in McKinleyville on Monday, when sophomore Sierra Fitzhugh shot an 18-hole score of 96 at the North Coast Sectional Division II Tournament of Champions.
The tournament assembled all the top teams and individuals from schools with enrollment under 1,000 students from around the North Coast. Fitzhugh’s score of 96 was good enough for sixth place out of the 10 individuals competing.
“She really kept her head in the game,” said Del Norte girls golf coach Alison Eckart. “It was tough conditions — heavy fog, ball carry. She relied on her putting and just played a smart round.”
Fitzhugh finished 14 strokes ahead of Fortuna’s Amanda Arneson. Arneson finished the regular season in fourth place of the Humboldt-Del Norte Big 5 individual standings, one spot ahead of Fitzhugh.
Eckart is excited about Fitzhugh’s potential, with two more seasons of eligibility left.
“She is going to do really well next year,” Eckart said. “It was great for her to see the competition. There were girls that shot in the 70s down here. I think she is really going to compete the next couple years.”
