The Del Norte girls golf team is low on numbers, but the Warriors got a pair of good rounds from both girls that competed at the Baywood Golf Course in Arcata.
Sophomore Sierra Fitzhugh shot a personal best score of 94 at the tournament. Fitzhugh’s previous 18-hole low score was 101.
“Sierra is definitely playing to her strengths,” said girls golf coach Alison Eckart. “She is looking at the tees and playing the fade that she has — she is being very strategic. She is also putting much better.”
Fitzhugh is currently fifth individually in the Humbolt-Del Norte League Big Five standings. She is in position to earn a white star when the regular season comes to a close on Tuesday.
Fellow sophomore Gina Danna was the only other Warrior to turn in a score at the meet. Danna finished with a score of 142. Danna had not golfed before this year and Eckart has been pleased with her progress during the year.
“For a rookie, she shows a lot of potential,” Eckart said. “She has great drives.”
The Del Norte girls golf team will close out the regular season on Tuesday with a trip to the Big Foot Golf Course in Willow Creek.
