K’Marie Magray wanted to try something different this fall.

So the Redwood School seventh-grader joined the school’s flag football team. Currently, Magray is the only girl taking part in the league, coaches said.

“It’s really fun,” she said. “I’m a daredevil. I wanted to try something new.”

Magray said that she has been treated well by her teammates and is glad to have the opportunity to participate and have fun in a sport she was curious about.

On the sidelines during scrimmages against Crescent Elk and Smith River on Tuesday, Magray excitedely watched the action as she awaited her turn to play. When it came, her mother, Kelly Lynch, sat on a chair on the sidelines and cheered her on.

Lynch exuded pride as she talked about her daughter wanting to try a sport normally played by boys.

Lynch said she appreciates the fact that Magray is participating in a sport she wanted to take part in and is having a good time doing it.

“She loves it,” Lynch said. “She really wanted to try it ... I’m here to support her in whatever she wants to do.”

Redwood head flag football coach Scott Lindsay said that Magray has worked hard as she takes part in a new sport.

“She’s learning how to play football,” Lindsay said. “She’s doing fine and is enthusiastic about it.”
