Girls basketball falls to Arcata

By Bill Choy

The Del Norte High girls basketball team lost for the second night in a row, falling to Arcata High 48-28 at the Yvonne Rocha Tournament in Fortuna.

Warriors Coach Buzz McCulloch said his team had trouble making shots near the basket, including several missed layups. Ironically, the squad did well from three point range, making five threes.

"We didn't shoot too bad from outside, but we could just not shoot from inside," he said.

Arcata, a fellow Big 5 Conference member, jumped out to a 17-9 lead and did not look back, limiting the Warriors (2-3), to only two second-quarter points.

A key problem, McCulloch said, was the large difference in free throw attempts. Del Norte went 2-for 4 from the line. Arcata went to the line 26 times, making 16 free throws.

"We did not get any calls," he said. "Basically, the difference was at the free throw line. Every time we did something, we got whistled."

McCulloch said his squad needs to play better as a team.

Lauryn Lesina led Warrior scorers with 12 points.

Del Norte lost on Thurdsay to Anderson High 60-30.
