The Del Norte High girls' golf team opened the season on Thursday at a tournament put on by Hoopa High at the Willow Creek Golf & County Club Big Foot Golf Course.

Del Norte finished 5th out of six teams.

Head coach Alison Eckart said the tournament, which was just recently put on the squad's schedule, was a great way to see where the girls are at, and for them to get the first event of the season under their belts.

She was proud that the four team members who played on Thursday improved their scores compared to how they finished in the first tournament last year.

The girls improved by an average of about 15 strokes.

Eckart added that her team also showed improvement in their putting, and she expects them to improve and refine their game as the season progresses.

Leading the way for Del Norte was Kayla Bohannon, who shot a 135.

Marie Fugate finished with a score of 136.

Katie Maltbie shot a 138 and Julia Dorman finished at 147.

Del Norte next plays on Monday at a tournament at the Benbow Golf Course in Garberville.
