Girls soccer team loses 6-0 to Eureka |
The Del Norte high girls soccer team fell to Eureka 6-0 at home Wednesday night. After losing to the Loggers, considered one of the better teams in the Humboldt-Del Norte conference, 10-0 and 8-0 last year, Warriors head coach Clar Byers saw some marked improvements this time out. He was pleased with the way the team was aggressive in the first half and was able to attack offensively and keep the Loggers at bay for more than 20 minutes as neither team could score. Instead of Eureka moving down the field at will, the Warriors were contesting them, which was a great sight to see after the struggles the team had containing teams last year, Byers said. “I was excited that we were able to hold Eureka,” he said. “They had to fight us down the field.” In the 24th minute the Loggers scored, which deflated the squad for a few minutes as Eureka scored two more goals in a three- minute span to take the 3-0 halftime advantage. In the second half the Warriors were able to move the ball better against Eureka, but the Loggers were still were able to score three more goals for the 6-0 victory. Byers said that center midfielders Ali Joy and Molly Lambert did a great job of passing and moving the ball down the field and helping out on the defensive end. Delana Saylor did not start but looked strong when she came in at center fullback and did a good job battling Eureka players and getting the ball out of Warrior territory, Byers said. Del Norte dropped to 0-2 for the season. On Saturday, the Warriors travel to Eureka to face St. Bernard’s at 11 a.m. |
