The Del Norte track and field team put up some of its best numbers of the year so far with personal records in 67 events at a Wednesday meet in Fortuna.
The girls team remained undefeated as a team, edging out Arcata for the team title for the third-straight meet. The Warriors outscored the Tigers by 4.66 points with a final score of 137.66.
“That is the way it is going to be all season,” said Del Norte head coach Samuel Escobar.
The boys finished in second place, ending their streak of three straight meet championships. Del Norte scored 107 team points, placing them 23.5 points ahead of Eureka and Arcata, but 14.5 points behind host and meet champion Fortuna.
The highlight of the night was the girls 300 meter hurdle race, which featured Del Norte’s Kayla Costello running head-to-head with defending HDN champion Lauren McCoy of Arcata.
Costello got out to an early lead and stayed in front for about 250 meters before McCoy was able to edge her out at the line. McCoy’s time of 47.5 was the fifth fastest in the North Coast Section this season according to Athletic.net. Costello came in second with a season-best time of 48 seconds, the ninth-fastest NCS time on athletic.net.
“It gave her confidence that she can stay with Lauren McCoy and that McCoy is beatable,” Escobar said. “I think by the end of the season it is going to be neck and neck.”
Grace Bruschi put in double duty for Del Norte. In addition to winning the discus with a personal-best throw of 106’3” and finishing third in the shot put, Bruschi played a full softball game against the Huskies on the field next door.
The track team will travel to Central Valley High School on Saturday for the John Frank Invite.
